Oxygen Cylinders

Oxygen cylinders, also known as oxygen tanks in the medical field, are containers that store compressed oxygen gas. They are utilized to provide oxygen therapy to patients who quality and require supplemental oxygen due to their respiratory condition. These cylinders are typically made of aluminum or steel and are available in various sizes and capacities, ranging from small portable cylinders to large stationary tanks. The oxygen is delivered to the patient through a nasal cannula, face mask, or other oxygen delivery device as prescribed by the healthcare provider.

• • Regulators: An oxygen regulator is a device that controls the continuous flow of oxygen from a compressed gas cylinder to a patient. Its primary function is to ensure that patients receive the correct amount of oxygen at the prescribed rate, and it enables patients to attach their nasal cannula for oxygen delivery. When the tank runs out of oxygen, patients must remove the oxygen regulator from the empty tank and attach it to a new, full tank to continue using supplemental oxygen.

• Oxygen Conserving Devices: Oxygen-conserving devices are designed to control the flow of oxygen you receive, delivering it only when you inhale in a pulse dose flow. This helps to extend the amount of time you can use each cylinder, making it more convenient for you to use oxygen on the go. These devices are also designed to be mobile and comfortable, so you can easily maximize your oxygen use anywhere. Oxygen conservation devices may not be suitable for all patients. These devices must be prescribed by your physician. 

Oxygen Tank Instructions

• Oxygen Cylinders store gas under pressure, which is indicated by the cylinder contents gauge, also known as a regulator, attached to the cylinder. You can deliver the amount of oxygen your healthcare provider prescribes by turning the regulator flow dial.

Turning Oxygen On:

1. Connect the cannula to the barbed adapter located under the regulator.
2. Open the valve by turning the knob with the wrench provided. Turn it counterclockwise half a turn to allow oxygen flow.
3. You will notice the gauge’s needle move out of the red zone when you turn the black knob with small ridges on the side to activate the oxygen flow.
4. To adjust the oxygen flow rate, turn the black knob to the liter flow prescribed by your provider.
5. When the needle gauge reaches the red zone, the tank is empty and needs to be refilled.

Turning Oxygen Off:

1. Turn the top valve clockwise until you can no longer turn it; this closes the valve. The needle on the gauge will begin falling toward the red zone.
2. Once the needle reaches the red zone, turn the black knob off.
